Sherritt’s Technologies’ innovative process to upgrade bitumen utilizes its proprietary hydrometallurgical processes and autoclaves, and systems to potentially revolutionize the transport of heavy oil. When fully developed, Sherritt’s bitumen upgrade process has the potential to save millions of dollars in diluent each year and significantly increase the efficiency of oil transport.
Sherritt’s process is based on the use of reactor technology that involves combining hydrogen with bitumen under pressure at high temperature in the presence of a proprietary catalyst suspended through mechanical agitation to eliminate the need for addition of diluent, a high-cost thinning agent that reduces heavy oil viscosity, and improve pipeline capacity.
The process has been proven successful in pilot plant testing. Currently Sherritt is progressing the design of a demonstration plant.
